Week 12: Wrap up; social networks and catch up

Welcome to week 12 – this is the last week of lessons in our Learning 2.0 program. We’ve been on quite a journey together and we hope that you have found it rewarding.

Discover: So what is social networking?
You have probably heard of Facebook and MySpace, they are just two examples of social networking services. There is a quick videoclip from the Commoncraft show which introduces the idea of social networking online.
See this map from LeMonde which shows the popularity of different services around the world.

Explore: How can libraries use social networking services?
Seb Chan at the Powerhouse Museum spotted an article that considers how social networking services can be used for research, marketing, sales, support and development applications and makes the link to the sorts of services we provide in the museum and library world.

There are some interesting examples of social networking in action for you to consider:

But what about libraries in Second Life?
Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. It is inhabited by avatars and yes, there are libraries and even library islands! You can find out much more from the Second Life Library Project.

Consider in your blog possibilities for your library using social networking for client interaction, marketing and networking opportunities.

Feedback:
This week’s adventure is spending a few minutes giving us your feedback about the program via: completing the feedback survey
Please complete this form to let us know you have completed this program. (added 29 May)

Congratulations on successfully completing your mission of discovery.

Where to now?
You can continue with learning 2.1

Have finished the program. Really enjoyed it and am looking forward to implementing parts of it into my daily duties (IT blockages permitting). Hope that either the blog remains "up" or that the notes are available online so that we can refer to them in the future if we go to set something up and need bit of a reminder. The course material and choice of videos was excellent. I will miss adding stuff to my blog - so I might be a pest and add things to other blogs in the program!

me again- just as well I have finished as our access to gmail has been removed- apparently we should never have been granted it in the first place as "it is against policy". So much for PD!

The examples of social networking in action shown in this module can be starting points for our library. We can set up something similar to the Animanga Club for our graphic novels, or children's section, or teen area or ... Perhaps include our library in Facebook?

It has really been a wonderful journey for me. I've learned so much not only from the modules but also from other participants' blogs. Thanks, everyone, for sharing!

And a BIG, BIG THANK you to the NSWPLN Learning 2.0 Team for the opportunity to participate in this wonderful exercise!

MORE POWER TO YOU!

This is the 2nd post for this as it seems I lost the 1st one again.
I've wrapped up and thanks for the state library and its staff members for their initiative and support.
I've written a summary on my blog and hope we will all catch up something later on and have some new actions to engaging a more wider community.

Well, I finished up the program this evening and, like Jalen, I feel it's been a wonderful journey. There were a few tools I had been meaning to look into but kept putting it off but this program has made me learn about them and so many more I had not even heard of! It has been heaps of fun and so very interesting. I really hope I get to use some of it at my workplace soon. Thanks to all the SL (that's State Library NOT Second Life) team for the program and for the comments. It's been fantastic!

I wonder if there is a glitch somewhere? I posted to this forum on the 9th (same day as I posted to the forum for Week 11) but my post has not appeared. Similar problem that Jenny had? I can't remember what I wrote! I also noticed there was a problem with the survey. In one section, it would only let you click on a few buttons, if you clicked on one, one of the buttons you had already clicked on would go blank again. Strange!

The survey should be ok now.

I have finished the program now, have learned so much that I never heard before, remember in the first two weeks did not know what I was doing, glad I didn't give up, gradually I really enjoyed and tried it so hard to do almost every night. During the course although I have written down my own notes, hope the program still up for latter use. Thank you very much to the NSWSL learning 2.0 team for the program support and my colleague's help.

I agree with all of the above. Thanks State Library for organising the Library 2.0 learning. I guess we all know we should keep discovering what is out there in Internet land so we can help our clients. If only we had the time! This program has given lots of us the motivation to get out there and explore. Those library staff you haven't done the program - don't know what they're missing - lots of fun and lots of really valuable learning.
Thanks again team

Thanks guys.

Great program. Really enjoyed it. Still exploring beyond it now thanks to the start you've given us.

For anyone interested in following web 2.0 stuff, have a look at www.webware.com - Cool web 2.0 apps for everyone. They've just done their "Webware 100" the 100 top Web apps, 10 each in 10 categories, according to Webware users and the fans. And you can subscribe to their feed, too.

Thanks again.

Cheers

Thanks everybody and especially to the NSWPLN team for their enthusiasm, comments, responses, etc - the course was fantastic and I will certainly be recommending it to others at my library to undertake the course - I really appreciate the opportunity to have completed NSW Public Libraries Learning 2.0 - a huge round of applause to you all! I'm heading overseas on a holiday in a couple of days and wanted to finish the course before I left the country (as the official finish date is whilst I'm on holidays) so I appreciate the opportunity to work at my own pace and finish the course before I head off to Canada!
Enjoy!!!

Well what a fabulous online learning tutorial.
I have learnt and explored heaps and now realise my Web 2.0 journey has only just begun.
Now I need time to fiddle, experiment and explore further.
Thank you for the excellent support.

I have finished and i really enjoyed it. I can see how we could use these 2.0 tools in the library.

Are the results of the survey going to be published? I would be very interested to see how many participants had difficulties with their IT departments. Superchicken77's comment that they "Should never have been granted [access]in the first place" seems to be a recurring one (I know of one library manager who asked IT why her staff couldn't access podcasts, but she could - and they removed HER access!!!)

I think this is a REALLY important issue if libraries are going to implement the great things we've learnt about here!

Was a great learning experience doing this course. I only wish all of us could have participated. Alot of the problem seems to come from above. Management can't seem to understand that to reach our community, Web 2.0 is where we have to go. They have decided that we are just having fun and the library has nothing to gain. How wrong can you be ... I always knew that the web was our next stop, but after doing this course I am even more convinced this is a direction we must explore.
Thanks to the team. You were great. Timely with all enquiries. You should all be proud.

Thanks for the journey. I have really enjoyed the course content & know that I will miss the regular time commitment. I plan to revisit the course content over the next few weeks to consolidate what I have learnt. Hope that a follow up/advanced course is planned!!

I'm really glad to have participated in this learning program in the given time frame. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks NSWPLN Team for all the hard work you're put in to create such a valuable program for us. I beleive that it will help us to perform at our jobs better than before. The networking tools will allow us to share our experiences with each other.

What a fabulous journey! - I so enjoyed the opportunity to explore Web 2.0 info. I particularly appreciated the structure of the modules - as a beginner, I was mostly comfortable with the Explore part. The flexible time frame also worked - I didn't do any of the course at work but could spend however long I needed at home working on the modules.
Thank you so much to the Team - an awesome achievement!!

Just a great big thank you and whilst I am not sure how much I will be able to use in our Library - the IT department strikes again - I am looking forward to spending more time with the various applications. Thanks again and goodbye.

I've received a reminder from Victoria on the last date of this course. Thanks for that. However I've finished my learning in April and I wrote my summary as the last post for this course on my blog on 07/04. Hope that will qualify me for a certificate. Anything posted after that date are nothing to do with learning 2.0 but just my writing for my blog.

Kim said...

Thanks for the step by step approach implemented in the course, this made it a lot easier for me to work through it and find out things I didn't know about Web 2.0

This was quite an enjoyable and fun experience. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the course and have learned so much that I can now pass on to others. Thanks for all the hard work that you guys have put in. It was well worth it.

I will definitely consider using social networking on-line for promotions, marketing, providing ‘ready reference’ on demand and for interaction with local communities. The main reason behind this would be, of course, to convince as many people as possible that the librarians are great at providing information and that everyone is welcome to not only ‘join up’, but also ‘join in’ and become an active part of a social network.
I have learned soo much, changed my attitude towards technology and get used to blogging and on-line sharing that, in a way, I am a little sad that it is over...
State Library 2.0 learning team 'has done it again'! Thank you very much for all you support, patience and guidance.

Hey!!Have finally finished the Web 2 Week 12. I've also spent some time today looking at a few coments and some of the other blogs. Looking forward to using at least some of the application. Even if I don't get to use it atleast I know what my clients are using on a daily basis

Week 12

Took a while but got here.

A lot of excellent & 'interesting' ideas covered during this process some however I have a problem with usefulness for libraries (such as facebook).

The process has given the opertunity to explore options that may have otherwise dismissed.

Many thanks to PLS for opportunity to discover & explore.

Many thanks for the opportunity to tackle this course. I've really enjoyed the challenge and have now completed the course. I'm eagerly awaiting a comment on my blog from you. Thanks too must go to our Library Manager for her encouragement.

This online course has been fantastic. It has encouraged me to have a go at so many different Web 2.0 applications that I would otherwise not have attempted. I've learnt heaps so thank you.

Ray said...

I have almost finnished the course and have definetly enjoyed the the program and learnt some new things. SuperChicken mentions IT blockages, which is part of our problem also, and I can't help wondering if the Fast Broadband Network the Government intends to build will help libraies by speeding up access and therefore IT depts may be able to relax some of their restrictions.

CJ said...

It's great to have finished the program - what am I going to do on my Tuesday night now? I would have finished the program sooner if IT's restrictions handn't been inplace - ie no access to YouTube. But I can now put the case to IT for allowing us to access these sites as they most of these sites technologies are very relievant to us being able to do our jobs.

Thank you for developing this training programme and continually leaving comments on my blog.I have certainly learnt a great deal and explored information tools I never new existed.Sometimes I was frustrated but at other times during the programme things just fell into place.Having started much later in the year (November) I found reading through other people's comments very helpful and it reminded me that other people had experienced similar problems.I am now looking forward to spending time going back to some units of work and looking at other participant's blogs.

Thank you so much to all those involved in setting up the tutorial as it has been very interesting.. I have learnt so much !
I feel my library can benefit from my knowledge of flickr/mashups etc - things I didn't know anything about before ! I have set up a Facebook page and it is going very well.
Thank you !

Thank you for the great opportunity this learning program has provided. It has been a rewarding journey, and the commitment from State Library Staff to seeing everyone progress through the lessons has been marvellous. There are many ways we can use the skills - not the least of which is assisting the people who use our library services & want to know more about it all. Thanks also for setting a secondary deadline for those of us who have taken a bit of awhile to get to the end!

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to learn about web 2.0 technologies. To be honest I was very negative at first, I thought only teenagers used these technologies but I am happy to be proved wrong.

Thanks for a great program, I thought I had already commented on the finalisation of this course. Anyway it has been a couple of weeks since I have been able to attend to this course. I will comment on week 12. I think with facebook becoming so prevelant amongst younger people, it would be so handy to post information to fb users. I know our council does it and my children are 'friends' with council, and they constantly comment on the info council provides. A great tool for them and us.
